A power supply has several names, these includes a PSU (power supply unit), Power converter, power pack or simply a power supply.
Purpose of Power Supply Unit:
As you know that computer systems consume very low power and the actual power used by the machine is step down from main power input. The recommended supply unit is 750-1000 watts, but it is equally possible to upgrade your existing computer with a new PSU with higher wattage value. Finally this thresold will satisfy all the internal components power needs i.e, processor, ram, graphic cards, dvd/ bluray drive, hard drives etc. However if you plan on running dual graphics/ video cards then go for a 1200 watt PSU instead.
Some Words of Advice!
It is highly advisable to never open the power supply box, no matter what happen, never try it because it is extremely dangerous in doing so. There will be no issues if you try to open other internal components since they run on lower power but the power converter is taking in high flow of electricity directly from your power plug, so if something goes wrong, the results could be fatal.
